About Us
One warm, sunny weekend in late 2005 I played golf with my friends. Later that night I was riding to a Warriors game with Randy Simon, co-founder and friend. As usual we talked about the shots of the day. At one point I asked, "Wouldn't it be cool if we could see our shots side-by-side on a website?" As software engineers by weekday, golfers by weekend, we became consumed by the possibilities.
Score Out was born about five months later. After searching high and low for products that did what we wanted, we found only a few that tried, none really coming close. Can you think of a website all golfers visit today? What is your opinion of laser rangefinders and GPS golf devices? If you or somebody you know has one the odds are it never comes out of the golf bag because it's too big, too slow, and/or is too distracting to use.
Today, after about a year's work, Score Out is publicly available. And while we don't yet have a single feature we talked about on that first night, I'm extremely proud of the Score Out Caddie, our GPS-powered virtual yardage guide. It is built without wavering from our principles:
- Play golf, not with a gadget. When you get next to your ball, check your phone to see yardages to hazards and the green, and then put it away. It takes about two seconds.
- Speed up the game. You save all the time finding yardage markers and calculating your position relative to them.
- K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid). This is a well-known and unfortunately well-ignored motto in engineering. However, we spent a lot of time on the details making it so you don't have to press a single button between your first and last swings of the day.
What does the future hold? For sure it will involve making more golf courses available and adding the features we talked about that first night. But my hope is you will shape the product by sending us your suggestions. After all, I would be a year's salary and a lot of startup costs richer if someone gave me that opportunity!
